Specialized programs.
Built for this region.

West Center runs a set of specialized initiatives designed around the specific challenges facing Mendocino and Lake County businesses — from the coastal economy to rural resilience and disaster recovery.

Coastal Economy

Blue Economy

West Center’s Blue Economy initiative supports coastal and marine-based businesses along the Mendocino Coast. From commercial fishing and aquaculture to marine tourism and kelp farming, the coastal economy runs by different rules — seasonal revenue cycles, complex permitting, and a deep interdependence with the environment.

Our advisors bring direct knowledge of the marine sector, including CDFW compliance, coastal access regulations, aquaculture financing, and the operational challenges specific to businesses tied to the sea. Whether you’re running a fishing operation, a dive shop, or a seaweed farm, we understand your context.

Blue Economy advising is available at our Fort Bragg office and by appointment. No cost. Completely confidential.

Regional Initiative

Redwood Region RISE

Redwood Region RISE is a collaborative economic development initiative focused on building long-term resilience across the rural North Coast. West Center serves as a delivery partner, bringing RISE resources directly to eligible businesses in Mendocino County.

Through RISE, qualifying businesses gain access to expanded training programs, capital access pathways, and peer learning networks that go beyond what’s available through standard SBDC services. The initiative is funded to serve rural and underserved communities that have historically lacked access to this level of support.

If you’re a business owner in Mendocino County, ask your advisor whether you qualify for RISE programming — it may expand what we can offer you at no additional cost.

Business Resilience

Disaster Preparedness

For businesses in Mendocino and Lake County, disaster preparedness is not a contingency — it’s part of doing business here. Wildfire, flood, drought, and utility disruption are recurring realities that directly affect business continuity, cash flow, and long-term viability.

West Center offers no-cost advising and workshops focused on building realistic continuity plans, navigating SBA disaster loan programs, and strengthening operations against future disruptions. We work alongside local emergency management partners to keep our resources current and practical.

If you’ve been affected by a recent disaster or want to build a plan before the next one, an advisor can help you understand your options and take the next concrete step.

Bilingual Services

Centro de Negocios West

Centro de Negocios West provides Spanish-language business advising and training for entrepreneurs in Mendocino and Lake County. Our bilingual advisors meet business owners where they are — in their language, on their schedule, and with full understanding of the barriers that come with running a business in a second language.

Services include one-on-one advising, access to capital guidance, business plan development, and workshops conducted entirely in Spanish. Everything available through West Center’s main advising program is available through Centro — en Español.
